Ryde Rotary Art Appraisal Day – Sunday 20 November

Rotary Club of Ryde offers the community an Art Appraisal Day on Sunday 20 November 2011 from 11:00am to 2:00pm at Addington House, 813 Victoria Road, Ryde.

Look through your house and select an item or more to be appraised by fine art experts Mr. David Hulme and Ms. Brigitte Banziger of Banziger Hulme Fine Art Consultants.

David and Brigitte are offering their services for the Rotary Club of Ryde to raise funds for the ongoing projects that the Club supports, such as Eradication of Polio, Tree of Joy and Borjegai School in Afghanistan, just to name a few.

The artworks to bring in for appraisal can be sculptures, paintings, watercolours, photos and prints such as lithographs, etchings and screen prints.  If the artwork is large, you can take several photos and bring those in for appraisal.  You will also receive advice on how to care for the artwork.

The cost is $5.00 per work of art.

Rotary Club of Ryde greatly appreciates Friends of Addington House for making the venue available on Sunday 20 November2011.

For any enquiries please contact Rtn. Nora Etmekdjian on nora@summitconsultants.com.au or 0417 699 955.

For more details about Ryde Rotary projects visit www.ryderotary.org.au

Hope you can join us and have fun watching some of the artworks that people will bring in for appraisal.

Light refreshments will be served by the volunteers of the Friends of Addington House.

Lorraine & Malcolm Cox honoured with 2 Paul Harris Fellow Awards

At the recent Ryde Chamber of Commerce event, hosted by John Booth at The Weekly Times, Ryde Rotary President surprised Lorraine and Malcolm Cox with a Paul Harris Fellow award each.  Paul Harris Fellows are awarded to Rotarians and Non-Rotarians alike, who show outstanding commitment to community service.  Lorraine and Malcolm are ideal recipients, with all the charity and community work they do.

Lorraine and Malcolm's business, Ryde Furniture Freighters, has become very well known for helping those in need.  They cart furniture for charities and they donate large amounts of furniture left over from their clients' downsizing moves – all at their own expense.

Ryde Rotary has been at the receiving end of Lorraine and Malcolm's generosity, when they offered to cart a shipment of furniture bound for one of our international aid program destinations.

Tony Abboud from Ryde Rotary introduced President Allen Horrell to the Ryde Chamber crowd (a crowd which, for some reason, seemed to be padded out somewhat with a few Rotarians!).  President Allen commenced his presentation with an explanation of the Paul Harris Fellow award and its significance, not only as a recognition of great respect and honour, but that one aspect of the award is that Rotary donates $1000 to the Rotary Foundation on behalf of the recipient.  This evening, $2000 was donated and two very surprised recipients were asked to come up and receive their awards.  Malcolm and Lorraine are two of the nicest, humblest people you could meet and they certainly weren't ready for all the accolades and the attention.  There were more than one or two tears from the recipients and from the crowd as the emotion of such a public recognition of great community service unfolded.

Congratulations Lorraine and Malcolm, on all your amazing support and good work.

Graffiti Clean-Up Program Continues Around Ryde

Saturday 7 August 2010 was Graffiti Clean-Up Day again. The Rotary Club of Ryde has adopted this program from Turramurra Rotary and has received full support from the Ryde Chamber of Commerce and City of Ryde Council.

One of the most effective ways to deal with Graffiti is to clean it off as quickly as possible. We have seen a marked drop already in paint vandalism around the city since our program began.

Rotarians, led by Past President Charles Kilby, met at the old "cash for cans" collection site at 8:00am and began another great day of successful community service. See you at the next one!

Ryde Rotarians for a Brighter Future

Last weekend Ryde Rotary completed their major local community service project – a working bee to repair and make usable the playground at ‘Brighter Futures’, North Ryde.

This important early intervention program for families facing difficult times is a huge asset to the local area, as it gives children hope and refuge when times are tough.  The problem was the playground was not safe to use.  The sandy area around the equipment was too small, not meeting the safety regulations of having sufficient distance from the equipment in case of falls.

The entire area had to be expanded, requiring a great deal of man-power, which Rotary was happy to provide over three weekends.  There was a lot of drilling, sawing and sledge-hammering, but in the end the result was amazing.  A brand new safe play area for the kids is now fully operational, and the kids love it.
